If your hernia is becoming larger or causing pain, a surgeon may decide that surgery is necessary. If your hernia causes an extra hole in your abdominal wall, they may repair your hernia during surgery by sewing the hole closed. This is usually accomplished by patching the hole with surgical mesh.
