Sometimes when your hernia is increasing in size or causing pain, your surgeon may recommend surgery. If your hernia causes an extra hole in your abdominal wall, your hernia may be repaired during surgery by sewing the hole shut. Typically, this is accomplished by patching the hole with surgical mesh. A hernia can cause a passageway in the body to open wider than it should. This can happen in the space where the esophagus is supposed to pass through the diaphragm, for example. Surgery can be used to close the gap in these cases. Hernias can be fixed openly or laparoscopically.
